We don’t sell your data, we don’t track you across the web, and we’d rather you read this than not. Here’s what we collect, why, and what you can ask us to do about it.

Who we are
The Fine Print is published by the partners of Kraken Media Production, a UK partnership.

Under UK GDPR, the partnership is the data controller for personal data collected through this site.
What we collect, when, and why
Newsletter signups
If you sign up to our newsletter, we collect your email address. We use it for one thing: sending you the newsletter you signed up for.
- Lawful basis: Consent. You tick the box (or click the button) and we send you emails. Stop wanting them, click unsubscribe, and we stop.
- Where it’s stored: beehiiv, our newsletter platform. beehiiv is based in the United States and processes data under Standard Contractual Clauses as part of their Data Processing Agreement with us.
- How long we keep it: Until you unsubscribe, plus 30 days afterwards in case of accidental unsubscribe or compliance queries. After that, deleted.
Contact form submissions
If you fill in the contact form on /inquiries, we collect your name, email address, and the message you send us. We use this to reply to you.
- Lawful basis: Legitimate interest — you’ve contacted us, we’re responding. (For inquiries about working with us, contractual necessity.)
- Where it’s stored: On this website’s own database, hosted with Hostinger in the EU. Not sent to any third party.
- How long we keep it: 12 months from your last message, unless there’s an ongoing matter (e.g. an ongoing sponsorship discussion, a tip we’re still working on). After that, deleted.
Server logs
Our hosting provider (Hostinger) keeps standard server logs of visits to the site. These contain your IP address, the page you requested, your browser type, and a timestamp. This is standard practice for any website and helps with security and troubleshooting.
- Lawful basis: Legitimate interest — running and securing a website.
- Where it’s stored: Hostinger’s servers (EU).
- How long we keep it: 30 days, then automatically rotated.
Analytics (Google Analytics)
We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used — which pages people read, how they got here, what they read next. It helps us decide what to publish.
Google Analytics sets cookies and collects data including a truncated version of your IP address, your device and browser type, and your interactions with the site.
- Lawful basis: Consent. Google Analytics is loaded only after you accept analytics cookies via our cookie banner. If you reject, GA is not loaded and no data is sent to Google.
- Where it’s stored: Google’s servers, including in the United States. Google operates under Standard Contractual Clauses.
- How long Google keeps it: Google retains analytics data for up to 14 months by default.
You can opt out at any time by clearing your cookie preferences or installing Google’s browser opt-out add-on.
Embedded YouTube videos
Pages that embed YouTube videos load content from Google’s servers. To reduce tracking, we use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com), which doesn’t set tracking cookies until you press play.
Pressing play on a YouTube embed means YouTube/Google may then set cookies and process data per their own privacy policy. You’re effectively visiting YouTube at that point.
- Lawful basis: Consent (your decision to press play).
- Google’s privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy
Cookies
This site uses cookies in three categories:
Strictly necessary — required for the site to function (e.g. WordPress session cookies, security cookies). These do not require consent under UK law.
Analytics — Google Analytics cookies, as described above. Loaded only with your consent.
Embedded content — YouTube cookies, set only if you press play on an embedded video.
You can manage your consent at any time via the cookie banner. We do not use advertising cookies, social media tracking pixels, or cross-site trackers.
Who we share your data with
We don’t sell your data. We don’t share it with advertisers or data brokers. We don’t compile profiles.
We use a small number of service providers (processors) who handle data on our behalf:
| Processor | What they do | Where they’re based |
|---|---|---|
| Hostinger | Website and email hosting | EU (Lithuania) |
| beehiiv | Newsletter delivery | United States |
| Google (Analytics + YouTube) | Site analytics, video embeds | United States |
Each of these processes data under a written agreement with us and, where relevant, under Standard Contractual Clauses for international transfers.
We may also disclose personal data if we’re legally required to (a court order, a lawful request from a UK regulator). If that ever happens and we’re legally allowed to tell you, we will.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Rectify anything inaccurate
- Erase your data (the “right to be forgotten”)
- Restrict how we process it
- Port your data to another service in a common format
- Object to processing based on legitimate interest
- Withdraw consent at any time, where processing is based on consent
To exercise any of these rights, email hi@thefineprint.uk. We’ll respond within one month, usually much sooner.
If you’re not happy with how we’ve handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint. We’d appreciate the chance to fix it first, but it’s your right and we won’t take it personally.
Children
This site isn’t aimed at children. We don’t knowingly collect data from anyone under 16. If you’re a parent or guardian and think your child has signed up to our newsletter, email us and we’ll delete the record.
Security
We take reasonable steps to keep your data secure: HTTPS site-wide, hosted on a managed platform with regular updates, no unnecessary data collected. No website is perfectly secure, but we don’t store anything sensitive — there’s no payment data, no logins for readers, no personal details beyond email addresses.
Changes to this policy
We’ll update this page when our processing changes — new processors, new analytics tools, new features. The “last updated” date at the top tells you when it was last revised.
For significant changes (e.g. a new category of data collection), we’ll email newsletter subscribers to let them know.
