How UK train companies got paid to cancel your trains
The £8.9 billion contract that let Govia get paid regardless of whether trains ran. Plus the COVID payday that spread the model across the industry.
What this is
The Fine Print is an investigative YouTube channel and weekly newsletter. We follow the money in British politics — the contracts, the consultants, the donations, the small print nobody reads because it’s deliberately boring. Then we read it.
The format is simple. Friday: a long investigation on the channel — one scandal, fully sourced, every claim linked to a primary document. Sunday: an email rounding up the week’s stories that didn’t make the front pages, or that did and were quietly walked back. Both are free.
No party line. No allegiance. The premise is that the system favours the people who already have money and access, regardless of which party’s in charge — and that the only useful work is showing exactly how, with documents and figures rather than slogans. If that sounds like you, the email’s on Sunday.
